When Suparno went to his house to visit his mother, for the rest of the world he was an inmate of a public mental hospital who had been allowed to visit his dying mother. As Suparno travelled the familiar path of home, he encountered Kaalu, a dog of the streets who recognised him immediately. Kaalu watched as Suparno went into his house, met his mother, took out his belongings from his cupboard and packed them to bring them back with him. Kaalu watched as Suparno bid goodbye to his mother and left the house, unable to understand why he was going away again. Kaalu accompanied Suparno till the end of the road, hoping that his presence would be enough to convince him to stay back. Kaalu does not understand the vagaries of madness and institutionalisation. For Kaalu, Suparno is not an incarcerated inmate of a mental hospital, but his long lost old friend who went away one day. When Suparno’s mother passed away a few days later, Kaalu waited for him to return so that they could share each other’s grief.
