Looking at Suicide through an intersectional lens

Anjali, a mental health rights organisation, working in sector for over 24 years, has been at the forefront of the mental health rights movement in India. Anjali has looked at mental health not only as a health issue but as a social justice issue. Although there are apparent visible connections between the bio-medical approach in mental health and suicide, Anjali's work has consistently interrogated the socio-cultural-political-economic contexts involved. Therefore, given the current evolving context, it has become pertinent to open a much-needed dialogue around suicide in Kolkata, West Bengal, and this conference will be an expansion of Anjali's work around building an intersectional discourse around suicide.

The conference aims to

  • Achieve a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the multiple facets around suicide which will play a significant role in designing, developing and implementing preventive interventions.
  • Serve as a space to look at the framework of suicide through a diverse and intersectional lens, for instances, deaths by suicide due to dowry demands, domestic violence, online trolling and farmer suicides, lesbian suicides, to name a few.
  • Collectively seek answers to some of the major questions plaguing the global discourse on suicide by engaging with popular myths, addressing common fears and anxieties and discussing strategies for crisis management, gatekeeping and prevention.
  • Build knowledge and sensitize people and communities to become aware of underlying and upstream contributors to suicide.

What to expect

The two-day conference will have a series of panel discussions with leading suicidologist, Dr Lakshmi Vijayakumar and other mental health activists, legal experts working in the space along with psychiatrists, psychologists, case-workers, bureaucrats and survivors.

Participants

The conference will invite more than hundred people from diverse walks of life such as students, teachers, media professionals, barefoot mental health professionals and other community and civil society stakeholders. We hope that this conference will help build a stronger and more inclusive public discourse on suicide.
